A Christmas party icebreaker that needs one phone
Type & Stars works as a Christmas party icebreaker with nothing to print or set up. Pass one phone around, everyone answers 8 questions in about a minute, and every pair’s score is revealed together. It’s free to play, whatever the size of the party.
How long it takes
Allow about a minute per person. The rest of the room can carry on talking while the phone goes round.
| People | Passing the phone | Pairs scored |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | About 4 minutes | 6 |
| 6 | About 6 minutes | 15 |
| 8 | About 8 minutes | 28 |
| 12 | About 12 minutes | 66 |
Running it on the night
- Start as people arrive. Nobody has to stop what they’re doing until it’s their turn.
- Reveal together. Get everyone round the phone, then read out Best Match at the top and Most Electric at the bottom.
- Hand out the cards. Each person gets their own card with a title for the night, and can share it.
- Want a second round? Play the room vs the test: the room votes on questions like “Who’d book the flight the night before?”, then sees whether the test agrees.
- Big party? Split into tables. Passing one phone round 20 people takes a while, so give each table its own phone and its own round. Scores only compare people within the same round.
- Someone couldn’t make it? Send them an invite link. They answer on their own phone and show up in the same round.
- At a work party, keep it light. Let anyone sit out, and don’t use the results for anything at work.
Three more icebreakers with no setup
These aren’t ours, they’re just good. Pick one if a game on a phone doesn’t suit your crowd.
- Worst gift ever. Everyone names the worst present they’ve been given. The best story wins.
- Holiday this or that. Call out two options, such as real tree or fake tree. People walk to one side of the room, and nobody has to speak.
- Two truths and a lie. The classic version, with all three about past Christmases.
Questions
Is the game Christmas-themed?
No. The questions are the same all year. It works at Christmas because it needs no setup and gets people talking.
What do we need?
One phone with a browser and a connection to open the page. There’s no app, no sign-up and nothing to print.
What does it ask for?
A nickname, a birth month and day, and 8 questions. It never asks for a birth year. See the full rules.
