A get to know you game with 12 either-or questions
Here are 12 either-or questions that work as a get to know you game, free to use out loud with no app. If you’d rather have the arguments settled, Type & Stars asks the first 8 on one phone and scores every pair in the room.
The questions
- Getting home after a party, you usually… Wish it had gone longer / Finally, quiet. You need to recharge alone
- You remember more easily… What exactly happened and who said what / The mood, and what it might have meant
- A friend vents to you in tears. First instinct… Help them untangle the problem / Hug first, problem later
- Before a trip, you… Have it planned to the minute / Book the flight, wing the rest
- In a room of strangers, you… Warm up fast / Wait for someone else to start
- You prefer conversations about… Things that actually happened / Wild possibilities
- Making a hard call, you go with… Which option makes more sense / Which option I can live with
- Your to-do list… Must be cleared to feel okay / Exists, and keeps growing
- To think something complex through, you… Talk it out with someone / Go quiet until it is clear
- Learning something new, you want… Step-by-step instructions first / The big picture first
- People describe you as… Logical, direct, to the point / Warm, considerate, caring
- A week before a deadline, you… Are already mostly done / That’s a next-week problem
Way one: out loud
Read a question and have everyone point left or right, or walk to one side of the room. Ask the odd one out to explain themselves. You need nothing but this page.
Way two: on one phone
Pass one phone around. Each person answers 8 of these in about a minute, and then every pair gets a score and a map of the whole room appears. Open a sample round to see what that looks like before you start.
Why either-or?
Our reasoning: open questions like “tell us about yourself” put people on the spot. A choice between two answers takes a second, nobody can get it wrong, and the disagreement starts the conversation for you.
Questions
How many people does it work for?
Out loud, any number. On one phone, 2 or more.
Do these work with strangers?
Yes. None of them asks about anything private, and on the phone nobody sees what you answered.
